Book of the Week: House of Many Ways

by Diana Wynne Jones

(Note: I have had so much school reading, the Book of the Week may become Book of the Every-Other-Week.)

I really have to say something first:

Glad that’s out of the way.

This book is a sequel to Howl’s Moving Castle and centers on a new country in Howl’s universe that we haven’t seen before. The main character, Charmain, has to go take care of her great-uncle’s house. Her great-uncle is a wizard and there is more to the house that it first seems.

Charmain is a most remarkable character, but this is a Diana Wynne Jones book. What else can you respect? She has a way of making the character’s flaws the most likeable part of them. I loved Charmain. I loved all the other characters in here too. It was fun to spend some time with them.

This book seemed a bit lighter than the previous Howl books, but in ways funnier and freer. This is definately a quirky sort of book, but is very fun to read.

If you haven’t picked up Diana Wynne Jones, you are missing out. I need to go read more.

  1. I love Howl TOO! Wow. He’s just so adorable–rather like Eugenides in some respects. This book is on my hold list at the library and I WANT IT.
