2019

It seems like every time I try to summarize what happened over the last year, I think, “Wow, this was a crazy year.” My life might settle down at some point. But it didn’t this year. And it probably won’t next year either.

In no particular order, here are some thoughts about my past year

  • None of my children are wearing diapers anymore and they are all (mostly) toilet trained. I have been changing diapers basically this entire decade (since 2011), so this is a big deal.
  • I took introduction to macroeconomics, intermediate microeconomics, intermediate macroeconomics, and an accounting class. (And I got three A’s and one A minus.) I also did part of a legal transcription course.
  • I drove a lot. A whole lot. But I read 80 books this year, partly because of audiobooks.
  • I moved to the house next door. And we painted the old house and the new house.
  • I now own my grandpa’s house and we finished cleaning it all out and submitted building permits.
  • I visited with lots of people, had people over dinner, hosted parties and potlucks, etc.
  • We went and visited family quite a lot.
  • I homeschooled my kids the entire year. And they learned a lot, and I actually feel pretty happy about it.
  • I went to the temple 12 times.
  • I read the Book of Mormon in a week.
  • I became a Sunday school teacher and I love doing that.
  • I worked really hard on not yelling and I don’t do it very often anymore.
  • I tried to spend less time on my computer, with varying degrees of success, but there was some success.
  • We tried to watch less TV, and sometimes that worked too.
  • I relearned precalculus, trigonometry, and calculus.
  • I kept blogging and taking photos (thought I did not do much).
  • I went to book club.
  • I gave away two copies of the Book of Mormon.
  • Got a swing set. Played outside. Built a ninja course in our garage.
  • Went fishing.
  • We did daily family scripture study and studied the New Testament.
  • Went hiking, including Corona Arch and Landscape Arch and some other arches.
  • We went on a vacation to Wyoming and Colorado, including visiting where we used to live, seeing family, and going to Flaming Gorge and Rocky Mountain National Park.
  • We also went on another trip to Colorado National Monument, Mesa Verde and Black Canyon of the Gunnison.
  • We went on dates with our kids about once a month.
  • We did ballet, after school club, swim lessons, etc.
  • I relearned some Spanish.
  • I got a scanner and started scanning stuff from my grandparents (eventually I will finish my own stuff, but I did do some of it as well).
  • We baked and cooked a lot.
  • We went to Goblin Valley, went on some dirt roads, and did some mountain biking.
  • MM was baptized. And she also went to Disneyland.
  • I wrote some poetry. And I wrote a song.
  • We had our 10 year anniversary and celebrated with paddleboarding, escape room, hiking, and the temple.
  • We bought a new minivan after our other car died and then I hit a deer in the minivan. But it got fixed.
  • I had sort of a mental breakdown but I got on medicine and have enjoyed much better mental health and quite a lot of stability the last half of the year.
  • I found happiness homeschooling and living in the middle of nowhere. And I actually wanted to be here.
  • I exercised a lot and got somewhat stronger (I can do 10 push-ups).
  • My kids finished handwriting books, language arts books, learned most of the times tables, and we learned lots of other things. SR did online preschool in the fall.

That was scattered, but I don’t care. It was quite a year. There were a lot of emotional ups and downs for me. And I own a house now. And I learned a lot.
